Sterling, VA (Feb. 1, 2016) – The Freedom boys swim team won the 2016 Conference 22 Swim Championship hosted at Claude Moore Recreation Center on Saturday, Jan. 30. With a final score of 439.5, the Eagles edged out the runner-up John Champe Knights (417.5) by 22 points.
The Eagles placed second in both the 200 medley and 400 free relay, and relied heavily on strong individual performances by Graham Johnson-who placed first in the 50 and second in the 100 free, Brian Luong-who placed first in the 100 butterfly and second in the 200 IM, and Kellen Campbell who placed second in the 200 free and third in the 100 backstroke to secure victory.
The John Champe Knights boys squad gave the Eagles a good run. With victories in the 200 medley and 200 free relays; and notable wins by Michael Kaslik in the 200 free, Joaquin Gabriel in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, and Kyle Barker in the 100 backstroke, the Knights proved a worthy opponent.
The John Champe girls swim squad finished the evening as the Conference 22 runner-up by the slimmest of margins. With a score of 428, the Kettle Run Cougars edged out the Knights by 2-points who finished with a score of 426. The Knights won all three team relays, and had strong individual performances by Maddie Oliver-winner of the 200 free and 100 butterfly, and Maren Oliver-winner of the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, but it was not enough to claim first place team honors.
