Purcellville, VA (Feb. 1, 2016) – In an amazing show of swimming prowess, the Woodgrove Girls Swim Team won 7 of 8 individual events, and 2 of 3 relay races in route to winning the Conference 21A meet by over 100 points on Friday, Jan. 29.
Highlights of the team’s win include the following victories: Keely Hemminger in the 100 back and 100 fly, Hannah Carter in the 200 and 500 free, Rita Frie in the 50 and 100 free, and Sophie Hudak in the 100 breast. The lady Wolverines also won the 200 and 400 free relays with a team comprised of Hemminger, Frie, Carter, and Meaghan Flynn. A win this commanding also required the solid support of all its swimmers filling in some key point scoring places including Flynn’s third place finish in the 200 free, Haley Russello’s second place finish in the 200 IM and fourth in 500 free, Kelly Keane’s fifth place finish in the 200 IM and 500 free, Sophie Hudak’s fourth place finish in the 100 fly, and a third place finish by the 200 medley relay team of Russello, Hudak, Clare King, and Shelby Mullen.
The Woodgrove Boys Team which came in second, were led by notable wins by Zach Martin in the 200 free and 100 back, and Nick Palmieri in the 100 free and 100 breast. The boys also won the 200 free relay with a team of Seane Keane, Aidan Bergel, Gage Russello, and Palmieri; as well as the 400 free relay with Bergel, Martin, Palmieri, and Jack Beisler. Bergel’s fourth place finish in the 100 and 200 free, Russello’s second place finish in 200 IM and third in the fly, Beisler’s second place finish in 100 back and fourth in 200 IM, Keane’s third place finish in the 500 and fourth in 50 free, and Joey Lassister’s sixth place finish in 100 breast contributed to the Wolverine’s dominance.
The Wolverines next compete at Regionals on Saturday, Feb. 13, at the George Mason University Freedom Aquatics and Fitness Center, 109000 University Boulevard, Manassas, VA 20110. Doors open at 2pm. Competition begins at 3pm.
