Virginia Beach, VA (Feb. 22, 2016) – Freedom’s Sydney Wrighte placed 3rd in the beam and 2nd on floor, bars and vault, although placed second-to-none in winning the All-Around title. Her stellar performance helped lead her Freedom Eagles team to being crowned the Group 5A State Champions. The state championship competition squad consisted of Wrighte, Anna Broussard, Cara Fragala, and Sydney Stotka–all of whom competed on floor, vault, bars and beam; in addition to Katie Macdonald who competed on bar and beam, Lexie Vicchio who competed on floor and Cassie Parks on the vault.
The Freedom gymnastics program has experienced tremendous success over the past three years, although this season marked the first time the Eagles’ squad hoisted the championship trophy.
“Out team was pretty determined to win this year, shared Coach Laura Wrighte. After placing 2nd and 3rd the last two years, we really wanted 1st in 2016. Going into the competition itself, we weren’t thrilled with our rotation of floor, vault, bars and beam. Some people would say it doesn’t make a difference, but scoring tends to be lower at the beginning of the meet and we started on floor where our gymnasts truly shine. Also, it is always difficult finishing last on beam because you can either win or lose a state championship on that event. Fortunately, the girls knew what they needed to do to win, and they did just that!”
As both the 2016 5A North Regional and Conference 21W Champions, Freedom had some nice momentum leading up to the state competition. “We had the right chemistry this year from top to bottom, said Wrighte. My assistant coach, Miranda Romano, has been amazing, our three managers have been on point all season with helping to keep the girls in great spirits, and each gymnast added a piece to the State Championship puzzle. I’m thrilled with their performance and their hard work to get to states and bring home the victory!”
