Purcellville, VA (August 9, 2016) – This past Sunday, August 7th, at the American Legion Mid-Atlantic Senior Tournament, The Virginia Post 34 Leesburg Rangers earned the nickname ‘The Comeback Kids’ in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Fireman’s Field.
The evening before Sunday’s championship match, the Rangers erased a 5-run deficit in the 9th inning, but fell short of victory in extra innings. In the championship game, the Ranger found themselves in a similar situation. Courtesy of a strong defensive effort by a New Jersey Post 159 squad, the Leesburg Rangers found themselves down by 1 in the bottom of the ninth. Unfortunately for the visiting team, it’s when the host team’s bats caught fire and base running took flight.
Rangers 3rd basemen/pitcher Kurtis Meyer opened up the ninth with a single to left. First basemen Griffen Buscavage then laid down a sacrifice bunt, which not only advanced Meyers to second, but beat out the throw to first. Kyle Bowles then pinch ran for Buscavage. Short stop Jake Cunningham stepped to the plate and bunted to third, but his speed prompted an errant throw to reach base safely. The error not only resulted in a run by Meyers, but advanced Cunningham and Bowles to second and third. A sacrifice fly to right by infielder Matt Eberhart drove in Bowles for the winning run and propelled the team to World Series Play in Selby, NC, August 11-16.
All were relieved that no one got hurt in the post-game celebratory pile-up.
