Leesburg, VA (October 13, 2016) – After a banner 2016 season, the Heritage Pride golf team closed out the year with a 2nd place finish in the VHSL Group 4A State Championship. The Pride shot a four-player two day total of 608 at the Tradition Golf Club at Stonehouse, Williamsburg, VA. Their score was 8 strokes shy of EC Glass’ championship score of 600.
Scoring for the Pride were Eli Newman (78/70/148), Garrett Ganley (80/69/149), Josh Petrillo (82/73/155), and Nick Rentsch (79/77/156). Hayden Miller shot 83/77/160 and Aiden Baron 87/90/177.
“Our hopes were to be the State Champions,” said Heritage head golf coach Matthew Swartz. “It is difficult to lose when you are that close to winning but I told the players how big of an achievement it was to finish runner up, and how proud the school and community would be. We fell behind the first day, but the boys stayed positive and played the best round of the year on day two. The boys fought and believed to the last hole that they could win. I was proud of their resilience to come out and shoot 289 when they shot 319 the day before.”
After graduating one senior from a 2015 golf team that finished runner-up in the conference 21B finals to the eventual state champions, entering the 2016 season, expectations were high, but cautiously optimistic for the Pride golf team.
Expectations and optimism translated to success on the links. The Pride finished the regular season with an undefeated record of 11-0. Their victories included not only the Loudoun County Golf Championship at the beginning of the season, but both the Conference 21B and 4A Regional Championships in the post-season.
Following both post-season championship victories en route to state championship play, Coach Swartz’ message to the team was that they would remember these tournaments and their achievements for the rest of their life, so try and soak in the experience. “We wanted them to focus on having fun, playing the game, and believing in each other.”
Please join us in congratulating the Heritage Pride golf team on such a fine season.
